How does KitapBuurt work?
KitapBuurt helps families in the Netherlands pass on Dutch, English and Turkish children’s books for free or at an affordable price.
I want to get books
Browse books without an account. To send a request, sign in and complete your profile.
Choose books and add them to your basket
Check the language, age group, condition, price and delivery options. Books in your basket are grouped by seller.
Choose delivery and send a request
For each seller, choose collection or PostNL where offered. Sending a request does not mean you have paid or that the order is confirmed.
Wait for the seller to confirm
Follow progress in My account → Orders → My orders. Books are reserved for 24 hours; if the seller does not confirm, the reservation expires. You receive an email when the seller confirms.
Get in touch and complete the handover
Message the seller from the order card. Follow the collection or PostNL steps below for payment and delivery. Completed orders appear in your order history.
I want to sell or give away books
Give away books your child has finished or sell them at an affordable price. Manage your listings and incoming orders from your account.
Add your book
Sign in, complete your profile and upload a photo through Add a book. Review the suggested details and set the language, age group, condition and price. Set the price to zero to give a book away.
Manage your listings
Manage your books in My account → My listings. If you belong to a school community, you can share a new listing with everyone or only with your school.
Review and respond to requests
Open My account → Orders → Incoming orders. If the books are available, accept the order within 24 hours. Cancel any books you cannot provide. Accepting an order does not confirm payment.
Manage payment and delivery
Message the buyer from the order card. For collection, mark the order as handed over after giving them the books. For PostNL, complete payment, label creation and parcel drop-off as separate steps.
How do payment and delivery work?
KitapBuurt connects families; it does not process payments, buy shipping labels or send parcels. Arrange payment and delivery directly with the other family.
Collection
Agree on a meeting place and time through messages. For paid books, you can agree to use Tikkie or cash; free books have no book price. The seller checks any payment and marks the order as handed over after giving the books to the buyer.
PostNL shipping
- The seller accepts the order and shares a Tikkie link through messages for the combined book and shipping cost. Free books may still have a shipping charge.
- After paying, the buyer reports payment on the order screen. The seller checks their bank account and confirms receipt of the payment.
- The seller buys a PostNL label, saves the tracking code and marks the parcel as shipped after handing it to PostNL. Creating a label does not mean the parcel has been sent.
- The buyer tracks the parcel and confirms receipt when the books arrive. The seller can also confirm delivery; confirmation from either person is enough.
Plans changed?
When the order status allows it, use the cancellation option in the order details. If payment has been made or the parcel is on its way, discuss refunds and delivery separately with the other family; KitapBuurt does not issue automatic refunds.
